For beginner cake decorators, the process of preparing and decorating a cake can seem like a daunting task, with countless steps and techniques to master.

But don’t worry—everyone starts somewhere, and with the right guidance, you can transform your cakes into works of art.

In this blog post, I’m here to break down the cake decorating process for you, step by step, so you can approach each stage with confidence.

Let’s dive into five cake decorating tutorials perfect for beginners. Together, we’ll turn your cake decorating dreams into reality!

1. How to Make American Buttercream

My go-to frosting when making a cake is American buttercream.

It is incredibly fail-proof, quick, and simple.

The fact that I can regulate the smoothness of this buttercream and the way it absorbs flavor and color make it my favorite.

In less than 15 minutes, you can prepare this buttercream using just five simple ingredients.

2. How to Level Cake Layers

Flat and even layers will make is easier to frost and build a cake.

If the layers are uneven the cake can implode or the layers can slide.

Prior to assembling a cake, I first check that the top of each layer is level and flat.

I like to use a cake lever or serrated knife to help me remove the dome on the top of my cakes.

3. How to Crumb Coat a Cake

A thin layer of frosting called a crumb coat will help catch unwanted crumbs from appearing on the top layer of icing on a finished cake.

Although crumb coating a cake may appear to be an additional step, it is actually essential to the structure and final result of your cake.

Additionally, it offers you the extra security that your cake will be straight and level before the actual decorating begins.

4. How to Frost a Smooth Cake

One of the most sought-after skills in the cake community, in my opinion, is frosting a smooth cake like a pro.

Similar to crumb coating, smoothing frosting on a cake has similar steps.

The only difference is that the frosting on top is thicker, and smoothing can take a bit more time.

5. How to Build a Layer Cake in 4 Steps

In this tuorial, I show how to build a 3-layer semi-naked cake with buttercream piping.

It’s beginner friendly with a step-by-video so you can learn how to structure a cake properly.
