Did you know that around 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold every year during the V-day season?  If there is anything about Valentine’s Day I can’t get enough of it’s chocolates, hearts, roses and of course cake.

In this post, I share Valentine’s cake ideas that you may like.  I also share links to some of the supplies/tools and photo props I use to create these cakes.

Let’s dive right into these cake ideas for Valentine’s Day.

1. Conversation Heart Cake

Conversation heart candies are so popular around Valentine’s Day.

Each heart is a different color and comes with a cute message like, “Be Mine, Love You, Miss You” and many other sayings.

I had the idea to make a life-size conversation heart out of cake, and I love how it turned out.

To make this cake, I baked a two-layer 6-inch cake, then found a template online in the shape of a heart, cut it out, and trimmed my cake into a heart shape.

Before covering the cake in fondant, I crumb coated it with buttercream to seal the crumbs and leave a smooth finish, so the bumps don’t show through the fondant.

Next, I covered the cake in purple fondant and used letter cutters to make the fondant message “ALWAYS & 4EVA.”

2. Red Velvet Cake

This cake gets its beautiful color by adding red gel food coloring. I prefer to use gel-based food coloring over water-based because gel is more concentrated, and I don’t need to use as much to get a vibrant color.

For this cake, I baked a two-layer 6-inch cake and used super red gel food coloring in the cake.

Once the cake was baked and cooled, I filled it with cream cheese frosting and decorated it for Valentine’s Day.

To get the wave design on the side of the cake, I used a cake comb (similar to an icing smoother but with teeth on it) in an up and down motion.

To add the swirls on top, I used a 1M piping tip and piped small swirls on the outside edge of the cake.

Lastly, I placed some V-day candy hearts, chocolate candy pearls, and red and pink sanding sugar to add that finishing touch.

3. Cake Gems & Treat Boxes

Cake Gems are similar to cake pops or cakesicles.

They have a chocolate coating on the outside, and inside is a delicious cake.

Treat boxes have become one of my favorite things to put together. The result always looks pretty, no matter how versatile the box is.

These cake gems are made using a chocolate mold.

After melting some chocolate and pouring it into the mold, I filled it with cake and more chocolate to cover the back of the cake gem.

Once the chocolate is set, I remove it from the mold, and I’m able to decorate it with chocolate drizzle, candies, and sprinkles.

I added extra goodies to the treat boxes like handmade fondant roses, chocolate-covered pretzels, and mini marshmallows.

Lastly, I used a fondant embosser to create the message in the middle (which is like a stamp you press into the fondant).

I used two different embossers to make “Happy Valentine’s Day” and “I Love you” messages.

I purchased the embossers from Etsy, but you can buy similar ones on Amazon. T

he cake box I used in the photo is also from Amazon.

4. Strawberry Cake

I made this cake for my birthday in 2020, but I thought it was perfect to share in this blog post. When I think of Valentine’s Day, strawberries come to mind.  Also, the simplicity of this cake makes it possible for anyone to try it out.

I crumb coated this cake giving it a semi-naked look, which means the cake is showing through the frosting.  I used toothpicks to place the strawberries on the cake. This kept them in place, and I didn’t have to worry about them rolling off the cake. You could add a fun cake topper or even a chocolate drip to make it even more V-day-worthy!

5. Mini Cakes

There’s nothing more adorable than a mini cake. I created a V-day Mini Cake Class showing how to create three different mini cakes. In this course, we made buttercream from scratch, assembled mini cake layers, learned different piping styles and techniques, and added a chocolate drip.
