It was spring 2013. I was an Army wife, a stay-at-home mom with a one-year-old, going through our first PCS (permanent change of station) from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Vilseck, Germany.

Being away from family and friends, I needed an outlet to tune out all the changes and loneliness I was going through.

I would watch cake decorating tutorials during my free time, and I quickly felt the need to buy supplies and see if it was something for me.

How I got started

For my first time living on a military base, I lucked out with some amazing neighbors.

We became very close and supported each other.

Since I didn’t have a mixer, one of my neighbors let me borrow hers until I could get one of my own.

With that mixer, I practiced my skills and began making cakes for my family and friends.

Word got around, and with my husband telling everyone at work, I started getting orders for custom cakes.

In the beginning, my focus was on making fondant-covered cakes.

It was quite a challenge to learn because fondant is tricky to work with, but I managed to pull it off.

With my husband working and me making cakes at home, things got a little frustrating trying to balance it all.

Making and decorating cakes demanded a lot of my attention, and I slowly stopped putting so much time into it.

Taking a step in a new direction

In 2019 it finally clicked that I liked taking pictures of my cakes and putting together “how-to” videos.

For the first time in many years, I felt excited about something.

This was the creative outlet I needed.

Even though I liked taking pictures and videos, I still didn’t know what I was doing with it.

I decided to create more content-like posts and start writing about the ins and outs of cake decorating and what I’ve learned about myself and having a family.

Finding my creative space again

After years of making cakes off and on, I wasn’t sure if I wanted a real future with it or not.

I didn’t believe in myself the way I should have.

I lacked confidence in my creative space, and I kept searching for something that would fulfill me more.

With all the ups and downs in life, cake decorating has always been that outlet for me to show off who I am.

It encourages me to grow into a better woman, wife, and mother.
