Growing up, I didn’t celebrate Halloween, but when I started my family, it became something fun to do together.

There are two things I think about when it comes to Halloween: pumpkins and spider webs.

I created a simple two-layer cake design that you can make your own by changing the colors, sprinkles, and message on the cake.

The cake has creepy buttercream pumpkins, spooky sprinkles, and a marshmallow web covering.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to

  • Crumb coat a cake
  • Create a marshmallow spider web
  • Make fondant message
  • Pipe buttercream pumpkins

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Crumb Coating the cake

I applied a rough crumb coat, giving it a worn-out and faded appearance.

A crumb coat is a thin layer of icing to lock in the crumbs.

I started by adding a thin layer of buttercream, which I colored purple. You can choose whichever color you like.

Don’t apply the icing too thick because you want the cake and some of the crumbs to show through, giving it that faded or old look.

Step 2: Creating a marshmallow spider web

Next, I melted some marshmallows in a bowl to create the web.

Once the marshmallows were slightly cooled, I used BOTH hands to stretch it over the cake.

Step 3: Making fondant message “BOO”

Once I was satisfied with how the web looked, I got to work on the fondant lettering.

I used a fondant roller to roll out a little piece of fondant.

I then utilized fondant letter cutters to cut out the letters.

After I had completed all of my letters, I put a dab of water on the back of each letter and placed it on the cake.

Step 4: Piping buttercream pumpkins

To create the buttercream pumpkins, I used a piping bag fitted with a piping TIP 1M and filled it with orange-colored buttercream.

I colored some sprinkles and chocolate pearls that I had in my pantry with black food coloring.

Then, to give each swirl a ghoulish pumpkin appearance, I topped each one with a black chocolate pearl.

Lastly, I filled the center of the cake with the remaining sprinkles.
